Who is Laura James ?

Here is a snippet from Laura's site ....

I was born and raised on a small ranch in Vanderhoof, BC where my love and passion with horses and barrel racing began at a young age. At the age of 4 I started out on an old appaloosa pony named Suntag, as well as a big sorrel quarter horse named Charlie who both won me many trophies in the local gymkhana events. Soon my parents, who both competed as well, (my dad calf roped and team roped and my mom barrel raced), were hauling me and my younger sister to BCRA rodeos where we both barrel raced and break-away roped competitively.

Through out the years of rodeo my desire and passion to become the best barrel racer and horsewoman that I could be, grew immensely. With the help and support of my parents and a special aunt and uncle, I was riding with some great teachers and clinicians. I am blessed to have a very supportive family that helped me be well mounted on some great horses, and those are the true teachers. One particular special horse that comes to mind is deck (special deckatan). My dad bought him as a seven year old calf horse who I soon stole and started pattering and roping off of. He proved to be one of the great ones with a huge heart. These were not expensive all ready made horses but they were safe and broke and we made them into barrel horses and rope horses, sometimes with growing pains and mistakes, but we always learned something from each of them, building both the horses confidence and ours along the way.

2014 Wild Horse Race Team Roster for the Smithers Rodeo - August 21-23rd

Howdy folks !

Just received the "list" from the spectacular SRC President Jan with the Wild Horse Race teams ! The Smithers Rodeo WILD HORSE RACE is always a crowd favorite to watch and we are very proud to have some homegrown Smithers cowboys teaming up to bring some local competition to the arena.

What is the WILD HORSE RACE EVENT ?

2013 SRC Wild Horse Race Action - Photo Credit: SR McClary

One of the most exciting events, the Wild Horse Race has been said to be a rodeo in itself. Unlike the bucking stock used in the standard riding events, these horses are truly wild. They’ve never been ridden before, let alone saddled, and these mustangs plan on keeping it that way! These uncooperative beasts are called “outlaws” which is a term of endearment compared to some of the names tagged on them by the competitors.

The horses are haltered in the chute with a long lead rope. Two cowboys hold on to the end of the rope before the signal to start while the third member of the team holds the saddle in readiness. At the sound of the boom, the chute gate is opened and as soon as the horse crosses the chalk line in front of the chute, the three cowboys try their hardest to get the horse saddled.

A team of two hold the horse long enough to saddle him and allow the third cowboy to mount up, ride across the finish line, dismount, and run to the judge. Sounds simple and easy, but actual practice and theory become two complete strangers during this wild race. The general excitement and mass confusion plus the crowd all contribute to the fun in this favorite event for the spectators.

A big thank you to our SRC event sponsors with your generous help and donations.

RODEO Sponsor FEATURE - C+ Rodeos

The Smithers Rodeo Club has a long friendship with this STETSON sponsor ! Longtime BC rodeo stock contractor C+ Rodeos are literately a member of the SRC family and we like it !

Owner/Operators Roy & Earl Call of 150 Mile House were surrounded with the rodeo life by  their parents Basil & Carol Call. Both (Basil & Carol) are seasoned team ropers winning many championships together. Carol had huge success in the Ladies Barrel Racing and as a trusted horse trainer in Central BC. To this day, Grandpa & Grandma still help out on the ranch when they can. Why you may ask ? Because tight knit rodeo families do that !

Smithers Rodeo Sponsor - C+ Rodeos

Established in 1985 (30th Anniversary in 2015)  with only a handful of bulls, the C+ Rodeos has grown to include 100 head of bucking horses, 60 bulls, and 60 head of timed-event cattle. Earl and Roy both do double duty as pickup men and bullfighters. Earl has won many "All Around Cowboy" awards and has been the BC Bull Riding Champion four times, he is also C+ Rodeos main Pick Up Man and Bull Fighter. Older sibling, Roy also rode bulls and was selected many times to fight bulls for the British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) and Northern Rodeo Association (NRA) Finals. Roy is the manager of C+ Rodeos and oversees the day-to-day operations of the ranch.

The Call Brothers are keeping the family tradition alive with help from Roy's wife Kelly and children Brooke & Cody and Earl's wife Kat and daughters Isabella & Paige. The families travel and compete at many of the C+ Rodeo performances throughout the Western Canada rodeo season and are right along aside with the day to day tasks during the off season for this longtime BC rodeo contractor.

Some of our earliest involvement with the C+ Rodeos date back to the mid 1990's when you had such incredible four footed athlete's on the C+'s  "A string" like Action Cat, No Respect, She Devil, Blue Duck, K2, Kryptonite and Classic Cotton. These were tough rank stock that gave the cowboys at that time ...a run for their money.

Some early memories were of watching Williams Lake Andy Stuart ride eliminator bull NO RESPECT to an 85 point ride at a private venue. Andy was struck with the classic NO RESPECT move of getting jerked down and getting his bell rung with a temporary blackout. But he was good to go within the hour and was a happy cowboy with a big payout...thanks to NO RESPECT.

Another time included Classic Cotton in the late 1990's, CC was standing in the chute with the always charismatic Victoria cowboy Roddy Rimmer standing on the chute platform preparing to mount CC for their ride together in the Saddlebronc event during the Let'Er Buck Winter Series. CC felt to need to show Roddy how she felt about him with a few hard "love bites" down his arm. But you know what ? Roddy and Classic Cotton put on a bad ass 8 second show and Mr. Rimmer picked a nice cheque...thanks to Classic Cotton.

These stock are also a piece of the foundation that makes up the incredible C+ Rodeo stock that you see today !

Earl and Roy were given the honor of winning the Canadian Professional Bull Riders Association Stock Contractor of the year award, competing against some of the biggest companies in Canada.

C+ Rodeos’ stock is continually voted by the cowboys to attend the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton, as well as the finals rodeos for the British Columbia Rodeo Association, Northwest Rodeo Association, and the Chilcotin Rodeo Association, where they consistently win top stock awards; awards too numerous to list.

Years of careful observation and knowledge of their bulls and horses has contributed to a successful breeding program with the awards and industry respect to back it up !

The Smithers Rodeo Club is very pleased to have old friends - C+ Rodeos back for another year and many more to come ! Be sure to give the Call family a big "howdy" when you see them at the 2014 SRC rodeo event in conjunction with the 95th Bulkley Valley Exhibition.

Thanks again Roy & Earl Call and all of our 2014 SRC sponsors ! Without you, there would be no Smithers Rodeo !

2014 SRC Rodeo Clown Signed On - Jayson Charters

SRC NEWS UPDATE

Jayson Charters - 2014 Smithers Rodeo Club Clown Specialty Act in #Smithers

Jayson Charters - 2014 Smithers Rodeo Club Clown Specialty Act in #Smithers

The Smithers Rodeo Club is so excited to have Jayson Charters joining our team this year as the official 2014 SRC Rodeo Clown. Jayson is well known for his high energy & excitement in his performances and loves involving our fans !

Ian Webster of the Merritt Herald composed a wonderful article about Jayson and how he is really a rodeo clown extraordinaire !

“He’s a spark plug. He never stops moving.”

Those were the words of one enthralled fan after witnessing for the first time the outrageous antics of rodeo clown Jayson Charters from Merritt.

Indeed, Charters’ performances are something to behold. All energy, excitement and eccentricity rolled into one. A chaotic blend of athleticism and hilarity that has audiences young and old splitting their sides laughing and begging for more.

It’s hard to believe that at the age of 42, Charters is a relative rookie at being a rodeo clown. With less than two years under his belt, he performs his routines like a seasoned veteran, and displays the timing and savvy of one who has spent a lifetime at his craft. Charters himself knows that he has at last found his true calling.

“It’s my destiny,” he says. “It’s where I was always meant to be. Everything in my life has brought me to this point.”

Welcome to the Smithers Rodeo Club website.  Please take the time to go through the various pages dedicated to rodeo in Smithers! On this site you will learn terminology, rules and see how the rodeo stock is cared for and raised.

Also on this site are links to our valued sponsors, many of whom have been with us since we re-kindled the club in 2002!  You will also find links to our associationin partnership; the Bulkley Valley Exhibition (95 years young) and the BC Rodeo Association who is our sanctioning body for the rodeo.
Smithers rodeo is one of 20 plus rodeos held in BC each year with cowboys and cowgirls travelling from one end of the province to another to attend.   New for this year we have added two new events to our rodeo lineup; Pee-Wee barrels for the under 10 year olds and junior breakaway roping.   Besides new competitors in these events you will see their siblings and parents competing as well.  Rodeo truly is a family sport!
Take a glance at our entertainment this year, our half time show is Niki Flundra, horsewoman extraordinaire; who is a 7x NFR performer!   For those of you who take in our popular Rodeo dance on Saturday night after the rodeo performance; we are pleased to be bringing in The Johnson Bros, they promise to country rock n roll us all night long.  They will also be playing at the fair on Friday and Sunday for anyone who isn’t going to attend the dance.
